Iceland is one of the most popular destinations in the world and is famous for its unique landscapes, rugged coastlines, and fantastic wildlife. As this country is visited by millions of people every year, many of the iconic tourist spots are becoming increasingly busy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, there are also plenty of hidden gems in Iceland<\/a><\/strong> for you to explore if you\u2019re looking to escape the crowds. Whether you\u2019re looking to visit one of the island\u2019s unique churches or head out for a peaceful swim – there\u2019s something for everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, let\u2019s take a look at some of the more off-the-beaten-path places in Iceland! I’ve selected the best just for you!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Top Iceland hidden gems<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

30. Seljavallalaug Pool<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Although Seljavallalaug<\/a><\/strong> isn\u2019t the most popular outdoor pool in Iceland, it\u2019s one of the oldest!\u00a0Seljavallalaug was built in 1923 and offers a more-private swimming experience than many other pools on the island.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the car park, it\u2019s around a 20-minute walk and although the trail is unmarked, it\u2019s relatively easy to find. Once you reach the pool, there\u2019s a changing room available to use and then you can hop in and enjoy the spectacular views all around you! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just keep in mind that the pool can get slippery, as algae grows here throughout the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

29. Ingjaldsholskirkja<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Although Iceland is famous for its unique churches, you may not have heard of Ingjaldsholskirkja! It\u2019s situated on the Sn\u00e6fellsnes peninsula and dominates the skyline as you drive down the road towards it.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Featuring Iceland\u2019s iconic architecture, white walls, and a stunning backdrop, this is one of the best secret spots in Iceland. Not only that, but Ingjaldsholskirkja is the oldest concrete church in the world so it has quite the history!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s also a monument outside the church that depicts a local Icelandic couple who unfortunately died whilst out at sea in the late 1700s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

28. Reykjadalur Thermal River<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re looking to relax in Iceland\u2019s geothermal waters, then I\u2019ve got the perfect spot for you!\u00a0Reykjadalur Thermal River<\/a><\/strong> is one of the most unique places in Iceland and you\u2019ll be hiking alongside it before you take a dip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, there are signs along the river that will show you where\u2019s suitable to get in and where isn\u2019t so make sure you take notice of them! Once you\u2019re in, you can relax whilst the steam clears your skin, and admire the Icelandic horses that often walk by.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

27. Tvisongur<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re looking for secret places in Iceland, then make sure you head to Tvisongur<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0It\u2019s an art installation piece that consists of five interconnected concrete domes. Although it\u2019s not much to look at, Tvisongur\u2019s purpose is solely for the ears as it\u2019s based on the country\u2019s traditional five-tone harmony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each dome has been designed to resonate in a specific harmony, as the wind blows through the structure openings. Listening to the sounds is one of the most unique experiences in Iceland, and you shouldn’t miss it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

26. Heimaey Stave Church<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Heimaey Stave Church was built in 2000 so is one of the newest churches in the country.\u00a0It was actually a gift from Norway, to commemorate the first church built in Iceland<\/a><\/strong> in the year 1000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With its black wooden design and mountain backdrop, it\u2019s quite a sight and is a great spot for photographers to visit.\u00a0Heimaey Stave Church is also one of the more non-touristy places in Iceland, as it\u2019s situated on Heimaey Island which is off the mainland. You can reach the island via ferry from Landeyjahofn and Porlakshofn.

This reserve is home to some of the country\u2019s most beautiful landscapes and covers an impressive area of 580 sq km (220 sq miles).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With towering mountains, striking cliff faces, and endless tundra – Hornstrandir Nature Reserve is considered to be one of the last wilderness areas in Europe! You\u2019ve also got a great chance of spotting wildlife here too including the elusive Arctic fox. This nature reserve is home to a variety of bird species as well, including the quirky puffin. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

24. Studlagil Basalt Canyon<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Studlagil Basalt Canyon<\/a><\/strong> is one of the most striking geological formations in Iceland, which is quite impressive!\u00a0It\u2019s home to the largest amount of basalt rock columns in the country, although they actually used to be underwater which is crazy to think about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, a beautifully colored glacier river runs through the canyon which only adds to the magic of this area. If you\u2019re lucky enough to visit between March and July, you\u2019ll get to see the river in all its glory. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, if you\u2019re looking for cool places in Iceland, then Studlagil Basalt Canyon is one of the spots to visit.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

23. Seydisfjordur Church<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

There are plenty of off-the-beaten-track places in Iceland, but not many of them offer an experience like Seydisfjordur Church<\/a><\/strong>. With its traditional Icelandic architecture, unique blue color, and hilly backdrop – this is undoubtedly, one of the best places to visit in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seydisfjordur Church has a rich history too as it\u2019s been moved from location to location, although it was originally situated at Dvergasteinn Farm. Once you arrive at this iconic attraction, you\u2019ll also get to take photographs of the multicolored pathway that leads up to it. So don\u2019t forget your camera!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

22. Flatey Island<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re looking to explore some of Iceland\u2019s off-the-beaten-track destinations, then head to Flatey Island<\/a><\/strong>. This island is located within Breidafjordur Bay and can be reached by ferry from either Brjanslaekur or Stykkisholmur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although Flatey Island is only around 2km long and 1km wide, it has plenty to offer with breathtaking scenery, a colorful village, and plenty of birdwatching opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can either visit Flatey as a day trip or you can stay over which I highly recommend! This gives you lots of time to explore, and just take in the beauty of this remote island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

21. Bridge between continents<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Now, this is easily one of the most unusual things to do in Iceland!
The Reykjanes Peninsula is located along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. It’s situated on one of the world\u2019s major plate boundaries; consisting of the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These plates are continuously drifting apart, and you\u2019ll have the opportunity to walk over them by heading to the \u2018bridge between continents\u2019\u2019. The bridge is located in Sandvik and is a must-visit whilst exploring Iceland. You can even grab a certificate from Reykjanes Visitor Center to prove you\u2019ve walked over the tectonic plates!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

20. Landmannalaugar<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Landmannalaugar<\/a><\/strong> is one of Iceland\u2019s hidden gems and is one of the most beautiful sites you\u2019ll see in the country. Otherwise known as the \u2018People\u2019s Pools\u2019 this magical place is found within the southern highlands and has plenty to offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With fantastic hiking trails, natural hot springs, and colorful rhyolite mountains, this isn\u2019t a place you want to miss when exploring Iceland. Although the whole area is beautiful, it\u2019s the rhyolite mountains that will take your breath away as they show off shades of green, pink, and red among other colors!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just make sure this place is included on your Iceland itinerary! You can book a day trip from Reykjavik<\/a><\/strong> to visit this incredible place!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

19. The Eggs of Merry Bay<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The Eggs of Merry Bay are one of the more unusual hidden places in Iceland<\/a><\/strong>, but they are still worth a visit.\u00a0As you drive along the road in Dj\u00fapivogur, you\u2019ll see dozens of giant eggs set on top of concrete slabs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These eggs are made of granite and were created by Sigurdur Gudmundsson who\u2019s a native artist. They were created as a tribute to Iceland\u2019s native birdlife, and there are 34 eggs in total to honor the 34 species that nest in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

18. Hofsos Swimming Pool<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Although Hofsos Swimming Pool is no longer a secret in Iceland, it\u2019s still one of the best places to visit! It\u2019s also not overrun by tourists like many of the other hot pools in the country.\u00a0Offering spectacular views of Drangey Island and the fjord, this outdoor pool is situated right next to the edge of the sea.\u00a0It’s a magical experience to explore it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As you relax in the geothermal waters, you\u2019ll get to admire the views and feel all your stresses just melt away!\u00a0Just below Hofsos swimming pool, you\u2019ll find some awesome basalt rock formations too. 17. Glymur Waterfall<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Iceland is home to plenty of fantastic waterfalls<\/a><\/strong>, but Glymur Waterfall isn\u2019t often the first one that springs to mind.\u00a0This makes it a great option if you\u2019re looking for hidden gems in Iceland!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Glymur Waterfall<\/a><\/strong> is the second-tallest waterfall in the country at an impressive height of 198m and is one of the most spectacular too.\u00a0The waterfall is located within Hvalfjordur Fjord and is just a 1-hour drive from the capital of Reykjavik.\u00a0After you\u2019ve parked up, you\u2019ll need to hike to the waterfall which takes around 3.5 hours.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

16. Aldeyjarfoss<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Aldeyjarfoss is another of Iceland\u2019s beautiful waterfalls<\/a><\/strong>, and it\u2019s located just a 45-minute drive from Godafoss.\u00a0With rushing water that flows down from the Skj\u00e1lfandaflj\u00f3t river and towering basalt columns all around, Aldeyjarfoss is a breathtaking sight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To reach the parking lot at the end of the road you\u2019ll need a 4×4, or you can simply park around 6 km before the waterfall when the road changes. Then, you\u2019ll just have to walk the rest of the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

15. Grafarkirkja<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Grafarkirkja <\/a><\/strong>has to be one of the most unique places in Iceland. It\u2019s the oldest church in the country and is situated in the middle of nowhere.\u00a0With its moss-covered roof, circular turf wall, and mountain backdrop – it\u2019s one of the most scenic spots in Iceland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s thought that Grafarkirkja was built during the late 17th century, so it\u2019s got quite the history. However, it was deconsecrated not long after it was built.\u00a0There are only a couple of turf churches left in Iceland, but this has to be one of the most magical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

14. Thjorsardalur Valley\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re limited on time during your trip – make sure Thjorsardalur Valley is on your itinerary!\u00a0This valley is one of the most scenic non-touristy places in Iceland and has a lot to offer.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Within Thjorsardalur Valley you\u2019ll find a hot spring area, the beautiful Haifoss waterfall, and the Farm of Stong which is a really cool spot to visit.\u00a0Iceland\u2019s longest river; the river Pjorsa also runs through this valley, so you\u2019ll have breathtaking views at every turn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019ll even find a golf course here if you\u2019re looking to tee off with the family! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

13. Mulagljufur Canyon<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Although you\u2019ll find plenty of secret spots in Iceland, not many of them offer views like Mulagljufur Canyon<\/a><\/strong>! From the parking lot, it\u2019s a 30-40 minute hike to the canyon and you can appreciate the spectacular views along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mulagljufur Canyon is like something out of a fairytale with its moss-covered cliffs, and cascading waterfalls. It’s a place you don’t want to miss.\u00a0It\u2019s also much less touristy than other spots in Iceland, so you might even get it all to yourself!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not only that but there are no ropes to restrict your access. Just be mindful of the sheer drops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

12. Raudasandur Beach<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Iceland is famous for its beaches, and you\u2019ll find plenty of them throughout the country. Although the first thing that often comes to mind here is black sand beaches, Raudasandur Beach<\/a><\/strong> offers something different entirely.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s one of Iceland\u2019s hidden gems and is also known as the \u2018red sands beach\u2019. With its unique coloring, remote location, and striking backdrop, it\u2019s easily one of the most photogenic beaches in the country.\u00a0Raudasandur Beach stretches for over 10km so you\u2019re guaranteed to have at least part of it all to yourself!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

11. Hellulaug Hot Spring<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Everyone is a fan of hot springs, so naturally many of them get incredibly busy in Iceland. However, Hellulaug Hot Spring<\/a><\/strong> is situated in a remote location within the Westfjords of Iceland. It can be quite difficult to find, which is why it\u2019s relatively unknown compared to other springs in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This makes it one of the best secret places in Iceland, and once you\u2019ve experienced it for yourself – you\u2019ll easily see why. Just allow yourself some time here to relax and enjoy the scenic sea views – without the crowds!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

10. Trollaskagi<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re looking for hidden places in Iceland then you need to visit Trollaskagi <\/a><\/strong>– especially if you\u2019re an animal lover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although this part of Iceland is known for its towering mountains and striking scenery, Trollaskagi is also home to a large population of Icelandic horses.\u00a0They are beautiful creatures, and seeing them galloping around the mountainous peninsula is truly something special.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019ll also find plenty of other places to visit in Trollaskagi including Dalvik, Migandifoss, Siglufjordur, and Hofsos. Make sure you leave enough time to visit the Herring Era Museum too!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9. Fagrifoss<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

There are plenty of hidden gems in Iceland, but generally many of the waterfalls can get extremely busy. However, Fagrifoss is one of the lesser-known waterfalls in the country<\/a><\/strong> due to its remote location within the highlands.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To reach the waterfall you\u2019ll require a 4×4 and the road can be pretty bumpy, but you\u2019ll be thoroughly rewarded once you get here.\u00a0Fagrifoss is one of the highest waterfalls in Iceland with a height of 80m, and there\u2019s a fantastic viewpoint here. You may even get the views all to yourself, as its location is quite tricky to find.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8. Budakirkja<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

There are plenty of fantastic churches throughout Iceland, but Budakirkja<\/strong><\/a> is easily one of the most beautiful.\u00a0With its pitch-black exterior, remote location, and charming design, Budakirkja has to be one of the most photogenic spots in the country.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s located along the Saefellsnes Peninsula and is still used to this day by the parish. You can even get married here which would be quite the experience! Not only is the church itself stunning, but its location is also beautiful. Budakirkja is set upon a lava field, so the landscape is incredibly unique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can visit this incredible place as part of a day-trip from Reykjavik<\/a><\/strong>. Other stops include Berserkjahraun, Kirkjufell and Arnarstapi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. Galdrasafnid – Museum of Witchcraft<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re looking for <\/strong>unusual things to do in Iceland <\/strong>then make sure you head to Galdrasafnid<\/a><\/strong>. Also known as the Icelandic Museum of Witchcraft; Galdrasafnid can be found within the country\u2019s Westfjords region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are two floors at the museum and tons of displays and exhibits that depict sorcery and the history of witchcraft. You\u2019ll get to see magical staves, the iconic (but unpleasant) necropants<\/a><\/strong>, and a variety of horrible-looking creatures. This includes the Tilberi and zombies! During your visit, you\u2019ll also get to learn about some of the horrors that occurred during the 1600s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. Viking Village Film Set<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

There are plenty of cool places in Iceland<\/a><\/strong>, but you\u2019ll want to allow some time to visit the Viking Village Film Set.\u00a0The set was built in 2010 and is located on private property, but for a small fee, you can enter and take a walk around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019ll get to see what it would have been like to live in a traditional Viking village, and admire the incredible attention to detail along the way! It\u2019s quite the experience as you can even head into the little huts and explore the interiors too.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Hrunalaug Hot Spring<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

During your time in Iceland, you just HAVE to visit Hrunalaug Hot Spring<\/a><\/strong>. Although the majority of hot springs are no longer a secret in Iceland, this one is and if you\u2019re lucky – you might get it all to yourself.\u00a0Located close to the iconic secret lagoon of Iceland, Hrunalaug is one of the prettiest hot springs in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With raw beauty, striking views, and warm temperatures, it\u2019s the perfect place to relax after a long day of exploring! The entrance fee works by honor system, but I\u2019d recommend paying it as it helps the farmer upkeep the hot spring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Klifbrekkufossar<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Klifbrekkufossar is one of Iceland\u2019s hidden gems <\/strong>and is a place you need to include on your itinerary. It\u2019s a seven-tier waterfall that\u2019s located in East Iceland and is one of the most beautiful falls in the country.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With a cumulative height of around 90m, Klifbrekkufossar is one of the highest waterfalls in Iceland<\/a><\/strong> and doesn\u2019t disappoint!\u00a0However, you can only visit this beautiful place during the summer months as the road is impassable during the winter. This is because the falls are located down a mountain pass.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Stakkholtsgja Canyon\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re looking for secret spots in Iceland then make sure you check out Stakkholtsgja Canyon! With its otherworldly landscape, towering canyon walls, and cascading waterfall – the beauty of this place is unrivalled.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The canyon is around 100m deep and 2km long, and as you can imagine – it\u2019s quite a breathtaking sight. Stakkholtsgja Canyon is another site that\u2019s only accessible during the summer months and requires a 4×4. From the parking lot, the hike will take around two hours in total for you to walk into the canyon and back.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Arctic Henge\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Arctic Henge<\/a><\/strong> is one of the most unique places in Iceland and is set in one of the country\u2019s most remote villages. Similar to the iconic Stonehenge, Arctic Henge is home to a variety of stone arches and statues. These structures have been arranged in regard to pagan beliefs, making this place really interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once its construction has been completed, you\u2019ll be able to see the light captured between the \u2018gateways\u2019. Many people try to time their visit to Arctic Henge at night in the hope of witnessing the beautiful Northern lights<\/a><\/strong> in the background.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Gudrunarlaug\u00a0<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

There are plenty of non-touristy places in Iceland<\/a><\/strong> if you look hard enough, and Gudrunarlaug is one of them!\u00a0It\u2019s a charming hot spring that\u2019s located around a 2.5-hour drive from the capital of Reykjavik.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although it\u2019s only a small circular pool, it offers one of the best hot spring experiences in Iceland as it\u2019s located in such a remote location. Not only that, but as you relax in the warm waters, you\u2019ll get breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains.\u00a0There aren\u2019t many facilities in the surrounding area, but there is one hotel and a small changing cabin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Final thoughts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
